You Define Love

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines love as “strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties.” The word love is supposed to come from Middle English, similar to the Old English lufu meaning friendliness and the Latin lubere, meaning to please.

HeartIf we look up the definitions of the word love in other languages we find that most of them involve some type of affection, care, affection. However, finding a definition that actually includes all the aspects for love seems to leave us without an answer. Until you actually feel what it feels like to be in love all the definitions in the world are pointless. And the moment you feel it, no explanation is necessary anymore. You know it’s love when you look into the eyes of the person you love, when you hold them, when you hold your children, your nieces and nephews, the first time you help your grandparents get up because they’re not strong enough to do it themselves. You know that’s love, but putting that into words, explaining it, that’s a different story.

So next time someone asks you to tell them what love is, stop trying to look for words like affection, care, or anything in that category. Define it though yourself, your actions, the way you look at people, the way you smile, the way you reach out your hand, the way you care for someone who brings no financial value or interest to your life. The way you smile to a random person on the street and say hello to the mailman. We don’t need a definition for love, because that definition is different for all of us.

There are people who have a hard time saying the words, but they love deeply, they love more than anyone in the world, they just can’t bring themselves up to say it. Then there are other people who say it all the time, to everyone, yet their version of love is shallow and shifts easily; their love is moody and inconstant. There are people who will love you no matter what you do, who will never give up on you, who will always stand by you. And there are people who will love you as long as you love them or as long as they get what they want in return.

When you look at your life, who’s that person who is the embodiment of love for you? Who defines love in your dictionary? Is it you or maybe someone close to you that you admire? What can you learn from this person who is the embodiment of love in your life?
