Carving an Elephant Sculpture

ElephantCarvingThere is an old adage that says: “If you want to build an elephant, all you have to do is chip away everything that isn’t elephant.” Sounds pretty simple, no? So if you want to carve your true self, all you have to do is chip away everything that isn’t you.

The big questions is how do you know what’s not elephant and how do you know what’s not you? Let me stop you right there, you don’t. And since you don’t, the only thing you can do is chip away slowly. Some parts will come off easy and painlessly because they’re not you, other parts will make you bleed a little because you chip into your true self, but at the end of the day what will emerge is that beautiful you, the true one underneath all the debris that’s not you.

Chances are you’ll make a mess, you’ll leave dust behind, you’ll get a little dent here and there, but once the dust settles and the wounds heal, you will be able to look in the mirror and see the sculpted self you set out to discover under the block of stone.
