Are You Being Too Right?

CactusBiteTo some extent we’re all happy when we’re right about something and maybe even a tad bit happier when by being right we get to make someone else wrong. And whether that’s right or wrong in itself is debatable. But what is not debatable is when being right is more important that living in harmony with the people around us. Going back to the relationship series, do you ever find yourself in an argument where the topic is not that important and deep down it doesn’t even matter, yet you just want to be right about it and prove to your partner that they’re wrong and you’re right? If you’ve never found yourself in an argument where you even forget what you’re fighting about, then kudos to you. But if you’re part of the vast majority, you’ve probably lived through this at least once or twice.

I remember this one time, I caught myself trying to be “too right” in an argument and I literally started laughing. I wasn’t laughing at anything else, but the insignificance of whatever I was trying to prove and maybe I was laughing a little at myself for taking things too seriously. After all, the argument was so important that I don’t even remember what it was right now…so in the long run, being right about it wouldn’t have made a difference in my life.

If you take a look at your relationships, especially your most important one with your partner, are you trying to be too right? If you are, isn’t it time you become right about beautiful things like love, connection, support, and growth, instead of focusing on the little things that are forgotten sometimes minutes after they surface?
