Are You A Catalyst For Change?

FlightWhen I was growing up, “catalyst” was this fascinating word I used to hear all the time in my house and I had no idea what it meant. It might seem an odd word to be heard so often at home, but my parents are both chemical engineers so when they would share about their day at the dining table, it would somehow just show up in the middle of the conversation.

Back then I had no idea what it meant, I actually thought it was a fancy device so I was quite disappointed when I once saw a sample of a catalyst and realized it was this powdery substance, completely not exciting and fancy as I had envisioned it. According to the Merriam-Webster, a catalyst is “a substance that enables a chemical reaction to proceed at a usually faster rate or under different conditions (as at a lower temperature) than otherwise possible.”

Whether it looked like the device I had imagined as a child or not, the purpose of a catalyst is the same. It enables change, it makes everything different, it makes the impossible possible; it allows things that were otherwise not an option to become an option. It got me thinking, how can we as people become catalysts in our lives? Sometimes certain events whether good or bad, become catalysts, but the bigger question how can we have that without that good or bad events happening?

When you’re looking forward to 2015, take a minute to wonder how could you become the catalyst of change in your life? How could you be that agent that enables everything to happen faster or to make the impossible possible?
