Just Try It On!

MalaysiaGodSometimes we get advice or suggestions from other people and before we can even figure out if it works for us or not, we make a decision to not even give it a chance. At times we make that decision based on the person from whom we get the advice. Other times, we just simply refuse to see if it applies to us or not. And other times, we don’t even hear the people close to us when they suggest something.

A few weeks ago I met a woman who recently got engaged and is shopping for a wedding dress. She didn’t have a clear idea of what she wanted, but she knew what she didn’t want. She didn’t want a poufy Disney princess dress. Yet when she got to the store, one of the options offered was exactly a Disney princess style dress. Initially she told the attendant that she would rather not try on the dress, but the keen eye of the stylist who works every day with wedding dresses didn’t give up that easily. All she said was: It won’t hurt to try it on. Then you’ll know for sure if it’s your style or not. So she tried it on and it turned out to be a very flattering dress for her. She was pleasantly surprised and the dress made it to the final list immediately.

The great thing about allowing yourself to take advice, a suggestion, or coaching is that the result is always positive. You either reinforce your original idea that it’s not for you, or you discover something new and unexpected that potentially changes the way you see everything in your life.

Next time someone offers you any kind of information, whether that comes in the form or advice, coaching, opinion, suggestion, or a simple comment, try it on before you dismiss it. Imagine you’re in a beautiful designer store and you’re trying on all the beautiful dresses (whether they are your style or not) or that fancy new suit. Once you try it on, then decide what’s good for you.
