Are You Using The Right Things?

“To live fully, we must learn to use things and love people, and not love things and use people.” – John Powell

According to surveys ran across the 43 states in which government-operated lotteries are legal, about 57% of Americans play the lottery on a somewhat consistent basis. I was recently talking to a friend about the lottery big win being $55 million for the week and what we would each do with the money if we did win.

My first thought was that I would travel the world, go to every little place I’ve dreamt of going, revisit all the little places I already love, meet people, learn, enjoy, be happy. I would take my kids on amazing adventures, live in different countries, on different continents, and explore every part of this earth. He looked at me and smiled. He smiles often when he looks at me, but this time it was different. He just said: “You know there are these people who win the lottery and all they do is gather stuff. They buy nice cars and big houses, but at the end of the day their lives are not much different than before.”

It got me thinking about his love of things that has taken over so many people as they are forgetting to love the people around them. So many people forget that money and things are just a means to an end, but people, experiences, living life to the fullest, those are the important assets that bring value to our lives. At the end of the day, anyone with enough money can buy things or even the impression of love, but once we understand how to put value on people instead of things, then we will be truly rich.
