Is Your Past Dictating Your Present?

Have you ever caught yourself in the middle of reacting exactly as you had done in the past to a completely different situation or a different person? Sometimes our experiences teach us valuable lessons about how to react in the future, how to better understand a situation, how to assess danger and protect ourselves, but other times our past experiences just get in the way of our current situation.

I remember this one time quite a few years back when one of my coworkers looked surprisingly like a friend with whom things had ended quite badly. The former friend was a girl who turned out to be a scoundrel, someone who not only didn’t bring any value to my life, but actually took away from it. The coworker however had no fault, but for the fact that she physically resembled my former friend. I remember finding myself reacting in certain ways to her just because she reminded me of a lesser person. Once I did realize what was happening, I was able to correct it and the coworker turned out to be quite an amazing person. Nothing like my former friend.

Do you have people in your life that trigger you in a certain way just because they remind you of something from the past? Isn’t it time you gave them a chance to show you exactly who they are?
