Do We Really Need A #Hashtag To Get Married?

VeniceNeedless to say the wedding season is upon us. Future brides are having their last fittings for the lovely dresses, grooms are looking forward to their bachelor parties and everyone is in a festive mood. If the whole wedding planning checklist wasn’t long enough for the couple, now everyone is getting married on social media too as if not having a hashtag for the wedding is the ultimate faux-pas.

Not only do we need a hashtag to get married, but coming up with that hashtag has become a process that spans over a few months before the wedding, required approvals and reconsiderations as if it’s one of the most important things out there. There are even numerous websites out there focused solely on helping the bride and groom generate a unique and quite perfect hashtag, as if picking a hashtag for the wedding is as important as picking the name for your child.

Now I’m not a huge fan of big pompous weddings; I’m more the small ceremony with loved ones type of person, I love the intimacy of declaring my love to my partner in front of my loved ones instead of doing it in front of 300 of “our closest friends,” but it does make me wonder if by fixating so much on these wedding “must-haves” that really have nothing to do with the love between the two people getting married, takes away from the beautiful day, the day when two people decide to come together, share their lives and promise to love each other for as long as they both shall live.

When you plan your wedding or if you’re planning one right now, take a moment to ask yourself what really matters to you. If you love the big weddings, the social media attention, by all means, go for it, but make sure it’s what you want, not what you’ve seen around you.
